What is dental sleep medicine?

Sleep is such an important part of our lives, but for many people, it can be a real struggle. Sleep medicine is all about helping with those challenges—whether it’s trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or dealing with conditions like sleep apnoea or narcolepsy. By combining expertise from areas like neurology, pulmonology, and psychiatry, sleep medicine focuses on improving your rest and, in turn, how you feel throughout the day. After all, better sleep can truly make a world of difference in your energy, mood, and overall well-being.

Did you know dentists can also play a big role in helping with sleep issues? In the UK, dentists often work with people who have problems like snoring or obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). They create custom-made oral appliances that gently keep your airway open while you sleep. It’s a simple, comfortable solution—especially for those who might find CPAP machines difficult to use. By combining dental expertise with sleep care, it’s all about finding a way to help you sleep better and feel more refreshed every day.

OUR TREATMENTS

WHAT CAN WE HELP WITH?

AN INTRODUCTION TO SLEEP MEDICINE FROM

DR. ASTON PARMAR

I trained at a prestigious education centre in Seattle, where I uncovered the critical importance of airway health and realised how inadequately it is understood and treated in the UK.

In 2021, NICE Guidelines (www.nice.org.uk) changed, recognising the key role that dentists can play in the assessment and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing. As part of the inaugural cohort undertaking a dedicated postgraduate qualification, I have been equipped with the skills to fully diagnose and manage airway-related issues, helping to bridge the gap in patient care.
